The official name of Den Bosch/ ‘s-Hertogenbosch, which is correct?

Before I’m talking to you about the history and facts about Den Bosch/ ‘s-Hertogenbosch, I’m going to tell you about why this Dutch city has two names and why I’m using both of them. This city in the province of Noord- Brabant, is not the only place in The Netherlands that has several names. Den Haag (or The Hague) is also called ‘s-Gravenhage and was inspired by the two names of Den Bosch.

The name Den Bosch is older than the official name of ‘s-Hertogenbosch. And most people would say that they are from Den Bosch, or visiting Den Bosch, and not ‘s-Hertogenbosch. In 1996, the municipality of ‘s-Hertogenbosch officially chose that name for their city. Researchers think that the name of ‘s-Hertogenbosch comes from a forest (bos in Dutch). On the current location of Den Bosch, there was a swampy forest, with hunting grounds of the first Duke of Brabant. This is where the name comes from Des Hertogen Bosch or the Duke Forest.

Fun fact:The city of ‘s-Hertogenbosch is translated to Bois-le-Duc in French, Boscoducale in Italian, Bolduque in Spanish and the German language turns it to Herzogenbusch.

History & facts about Den Bosch/ ‘s-Hertogenbosch

Den Bosch is the capital of the Dutch province of Noord- Brabant and has around 110.000 inhabitants, which makes is the fourth city of Noord- Brabant (afterEindhoven, Tilburg & Breda).

It is said that ‘s-Hertogenbosch obtained its city rights from count Godfried III of Leuven, who was also the duke of Neder- Lotharingen as Godfried VII, around 1184. It’s one of the oldest cities in The Netherlands, and archaeological findings show that habitation in the area has existed for thousands of years. A Neanderthal settlement that dates back to 40-70.000 years B.C. was found in 2013. At that time the area of current Noord- Brabant wasn’t more than a bare, sandy tundra during the Würm glaciation.

The city of Den Bosch was founded as a trading post, which was very rare during that time as most cities came forth from a monastery or agricultural settlement. Soon after this settlement was found, the count already gave Den Bosch city rights. This shaped ‘s-Hertogenbosch in the city it is today, as it has to become the military pillar in the region. The creation of fortifications in Den Bosch started shortly after the town was founded and construction has been finished in around 1225.

The time after that ‘s-Hertogenbosch became the fourth capital of the Duchy of Brabant, and it governed the area of the entire Eastern part of the city of the current province of Noord- Brabant. Den Bosch continued to grow, so soon after the fortifications weren’t big enough and the city needed more space. Then new fortifications were built. Construction started in 1318, but it was only finished fifty years later. This changed the city of Den Bosch from nine to more than 100 hectares. Later on, two other areas were added to the city: one at the end of the 14th century (eight hectares) and another one around 1540 (4,5 hectares).

Just like almost any Dutch city, city fires also made their way to ‘s-Hertogenbosch. In 1419 and 1463, massive city fires took places in Den Bosch.

‘s- Hertogenbosch was a famous city for the Duchy of Brabant in their battle against Gelre. Den Bosch was flourishing, both economically as culturally, during the 1540s. Famous people like painter Jeroen Bosch and playwright Macropedius were living and working in the city. Not long after this significant period, the 80-year-war was knocking on the door of ‘s-Hertogenbosch. In 1579, the Prince of Parma was looking to conquer the Southern Netherlands (at that time Belgium, Luxembourg and the Dutch provinces of Noord- Brabant & Limburg). The people from Den Bosch had two choices, or they became a part of the Habsburgers or to fight. They chose to be a part of the Habsburgers. In the years after that, Den Bosch was attacked six times. Mostly by Prince Maurits of Orange of the new Dutch Republic, but unfortunately not successful. However, that changed not long after.

In 1629, the brother of Prince Maurits of Orange (Prince Frederik Hendrik of Orange) created the siege of ‘s-Hertogenbosch. With 30.000 men he surrounded the city. At first, the people in Den Bosch weren’t anxious, as the swampy land and rivers have been very hard to cross. But they didn’t expect what Frederik Hendrik had in store for them.

With the second army of thousands of farmworkers from the Holland, Utrecht and Gelderland region, they changed the direction of the rivers that surrounded the city. And they created dykes along with this new land, to remove the final water with hundreds of horse mills. The people of ‘s-Hertogenbosch didn’t know what happened and had to give up their city to the new Dutch Republic after three months.

At the beginning of the 19th century, The Netherlands was occupied by the French. Napoleon travelled trough the area of Noord- Brabant when he also visited Den Bosch. He was very interested in the infrastructure, churches, culture and crafts.

In the second half of the 19th century ‘s-Hertogenbosch was the second biggest city (afterUtrecht) in The Netherlands. The river, the Dieze that flows through the city of Den Bosch became slowly closed off from above. A lot of houses and other buildings were built over this open sewage ‘system’, and there wasn’t enough space for new inhabitants. In 1900, Den Bosch had the highest child mortality in The Netherlands.

During the Second World War, Den Bosch was liberated by allied forces in October 1944. The city of ‘s-Hertogenbosch was ignored by the allied forces earlier during Operation Market Garden in September 1944. During that battle Eindhoven, Nijmegen and the towns in this region were all liberated, but not Den Bosch. On the 22nd of October, the British Second Army arrived in the city of Den Bosch, the fighting lasted until the 27th of October.

Den Bosch suffered a lot under the Second World War, just like the rest of The Netherlands. But in this Dutch city, there were essential departments of the Nazis located, which increased the number of Nazis in the town. There was also a strong resistance movement in Den Bosch which launched quite a few attacks on the Nazis, robbed their weapon storages, etc. Both bishops, as well as ‘regular’ people, were part of this movement.

Currently, the population in Den Bosch/ ‘s-Hertogenbosch is around 150.000 inhabitants.
